This I did for you, what are you doing for me?And he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised. (2 Corinthians 5:15) There's this story I once read about Count Zinzendorf, a German Pietist. He was looking at a painting of the crucifixion and – I'm not sure whether these words were beneath the painting, or whether he heard God speak them to him, but they moved him immensely: "This I did for you – what are you doing for me?" God's gift of mercy is a gift – it is free. We don't have to do anything to "deserve" it because, honestly speaking, we can't do anything to deserve it – we'll never deserve it. Grace is grace exactly because it is an undeserved, unrepayable gift. But still, the cross should challenge us. Grace is free, but it is not cheap. Following Jesus costs something. Jesus' first disciples left everything behind: their jobs, their homes, their comforts, even their families.
